Nelson Mandela was born on 18th of april in 1918 in a small village called Mvezo, Transke’s capital. His real name is Rolihlahla Dalibhunga, which means ‘’troublemaker’’. Nelson Mandela was a member of Xhose tribe and his father was the leader of it. Nelson Mandela’s mother was the third wife of Mandela’s father. When Nelson Mandela was 5 he became a sheepherd; because for his tribe the livestock was very important. In these years he learned to hit the birds with a sling, to pick up fruits and to fight with a tick. When he was 22 years he escaped with his cousin Justice because he wanted to avoid a planned out marriage. He took shelter in Johannesburg city, and attended a college in Healdtown. His teacher gave him the name Nelson, because he thought that the south african’s names were too tribal and too complicated to pronounce. Maybe Mandela’s name was inspired to the admiral Lord Nelson. In 1942 he founded the National Congress Youth League but in 1956 he was arrested and he risked the death penality but at the end he was acquited. In 1961 he became the leader of the ANC because he wanted to fight against the apartheid, however a year later he was captured. During this imprisonment Mandela wrote his biography. Mandela was offered a proposal: he would have been free if he had abandoned the armed struggle, but he refused this proposal and he stayed in prison for other 5 years. His release was in 1990, it was made possible by the south african president De Klerk. In 1993 Mandela and De Klerk received the Nobel Peace Prize. After his imprisonment Nelson became the president of the ANC and the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. In the past Mandela was criticized because he had to come into contact with Geddafi and Fidel Castro. Mandela has been married 3 times, his first marriage was with Evelyn Ntoko Mase, the second marriage was with Winnie Madikizela and when he was 80 he married Machel. He received many honorary titles, for example the ‘’l’Order of St. John” from Elisabeth Queen and the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” from George Bush. In 2004 he wanted to retire from the public life and to pass the rest of his life with his family. Four years later, a big concert was unwinded in London to celebrate Mandela’s 90 years and to remember his struggle for fight against the racism.
