Assuming you're talking about Adm. Tamon Yamaguchi, he literally went down with the ship. He was on the IJN carrier, Hiryu, when she was sunk on 4 June, 1942 at the Battle of Midway. Legend has it that he and the ship's captain went down together, while admiring the moon.
